Causes of Back Injuries

Back injuries in the mining sector occur because of:

  • Lifting.
  • Forceful movements, especially when twisting, pushing or pulling.
  • Manual handling of equipment and materials.
  • Awkward postures.
  • Muscular stress and overexertion.
  • Falls, slips and trips.
  • Crush injuries.
  • Motor vehicle collisions.
  • Exposure to whole body vibration interacting with other factors which increases the risk of a back injury.

Types of Back Injury

Back injuries which may be suffered in the course of employment include:

  • Damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments.
  • Sprains and strains.
  • Herniated spinal discs.
  • Ruptured discs.
  • Disc degeneration.
  • Spine fracture.
  • Spinal cord damage.
  • Nerve injury.
  • Quadriplegia.
  • Paraplegia.
  • Worsening or aggravation of pre-existing back injury or disease.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

If you are experiencing back pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in your legs, difficulties walking and standing, difficulties urinating, you should seek medical attention straight away. Severe back injuries can result in permanent damage and disability.

Your General Practitioner should conduct a physical examination and order any necessary investigations. During a physical examination, your doctor may watch how you stand and walk, check your reflexes, check muscle strength and sensation, and check for signs of nerve root irritation.

Your doctor may then order tests such as:

X-rays – x-rays show bones and bony structures in your body. They are useful for diagnosing spinal fractures and osteoarthritis.

Computed Tomography (CT scan) - a CT scan allows your doctor to see structures that cannot be seen on traditional x-rays. A CT scan is useful in diagnosing tumours, herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - an MRI scan not only shows bone structure, but also shows soft tissue such as ligaments, tendons and blood vessels. An MRI scan is useful in diagnosing inflammation, tumours, and pressure on nerves.

Treatment of Back Pain

Treatment of back pain generally depends on the cause of the pain. Acute back pain caused by sprains can generally be treated with paracetemol to ease the pain.

Chronic back pain may be assisted by surgery or non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatments include physiotherapy, exercise, swimming, medications, analgesics, nerve root blocks, facet joint injections.

For conditions such as cauda equina syndrome, prompt surgery is necessary.

Herniated discs may be treated by laminectomy/discectomy, microdiscectomy or laser surgery. Spinal fusions, disc replacements and vertebroplasty are other types of back surgery.
